Al-Andalus Andalusian Captain from Gripping Beast painted by Neldoreth - An Hour of Wolves & Shattered Shields

Al-Andalus Andalusian Captain  -  Posted: October 13, 2015  -  Manufacturer: Gripping Beast
The captain of the unit that I am building... This is a conversion including Conquest Miniatures' Normans (the head), Arab foot, and some sculpting putty to put the chain and overcoat. I'm pretty happy with it! The only thing that I'm not sure about is the colour of the design one the shield, but I've done worse!

I really like the designs of Andalusian clothing. The long robes, the flowery patterns. They're just awesome! I'm pretty happy with this shield as well, but it's not perfect.

This shield was a pleasure to paint, and I'm happy with it. I also like the outfit a lot as well. I'm still not sure about the green colour scheme... the way it comes up to yellow I'm not so sure about, but overall, I'm pretty happy with it!

This one is my favourite of the three spearmen I've done in this batch. The shield is my favourite. I also like the simple robe as well, and the resolution on the face. Facing down his fear withstern resolve!

Al-Andalus Andalusian Slinger from Gripping Beast painted by Neldoreth - An Hour of Wolves & Shattered Shields

Al-Andalus Andalusian Slinger  -  Posted: October 13, 2015  -  Manufacturer: Gripping Beast
I've read that there were a lot of slingers in Andalusian spain, so I wanted to do at least one whole unit of them, and this is the first one. A poor Arab guy working his way up in the world, and probably handy with the sling! Let's hope he survives! This one is a conversion, I removed the knife on the belt, added the side bag, and used a slinger's hand from Gripping Beast's dark-age warrior box set.

In addition to being a lot of slingers in Andalusian spain, there were also 'slav' slaves. Apparently the slaves weren't slavs, but northern European, and so 'slavs' was a misnomer. So, I imagined that this was an unlucky Norseman, captured during a raid, and given a sling to work off his freedom! I like this one a lot! The green, not so much, but overall, I'm liking it! The head and slinger hand are from Gripping Beast's dark-age warrior figs, and the head is either from GB's Vikings, or from the Dark Age Warriors, but I can't recall...

Al-Andalus Andalusian Light Horse from HaT Miniatures painted by Neldoreth - An Hour of Wolves & Shattered Shields

These Andalusian light horse match the typical short spear or javelin armed light horse that were common during the period. These guys represent a rather wealthy andsuccessful band of raiders. Only the best warriors can afford these fabrics! One head swap and arm adjustment here.

The side view shows the horses pretty well. I like the way they painted up as well as the sculpts themselves. Not nearly as nice as Perry miniatures, but for the price they are very nice.

They look fine from behind as well! The guy second from the left and the guy on the far right are based on the same figure. The original one is second from the left. The guy on the right has had his arm put down and has a head from Wargames Factory's viking heads.

These figures have a lot of cloth with the perfect amount of detail to allow for some excellent fabric patterns. These may be some of the best Andalusian figs available out there. Definitely better than the olf Gripping Beast and Old Glory figs. Certainly the best HaT pre-gunpowder figs to date.

A close up of the converted rider. You can see the right arm join very clearly here, but I think it still works. Also the head really works as well I think. Not all Andalusians were wearing turbans during the period. In fact, many of them weren't!

A close up of the middle two. The face detail of the figures isn't great, but it paints up pretty well regardless.

The guy on the right is probably the best fig in the bunch sculpt wise and painting wise. Pretty happy with it.

You can see how the Wargames Factory viking head gives the figure on the left some motion. The pure HaT fig on the right is pretty static looking... no blowing cloth or hair. Still, not too bad.

These figures paint up pretty well overall despite having only two horse archer poses. The alternate horse poses really fill that gap.

The horses in particular are very good, especially compared to some of the other premier figure lines, such as Gripping Beast and Old Glory figures. The figures themselves are very clean sculpts, even if the details are a little soft. Very similar in quality to the Gripping Beast Andalusian figures.

The clothes on these figures gives a lot of space to do cloth patterns and details. I'm a bit rusty these days, but overall I'm pretty happy. The shields were fun even though they were small.

You can see the smooth lines and well textured surfaces of the figures. In all honesty, they were a pleasure to paint.

Al-Andalus Andalusian Light Horse and Norman Knights  -  Posted: October 19, 2013  -  Manufacturer: HaT and Conquest Miniatures
For scale, these Andalusians take on some Frankish knights working as mercenaries for the Kingdom of Aragon. The french figures scale pretty well with the HaT Andalusian light horse. That's not true for the other HaT Andalusian figures though, so be careful.

Al-Andalus Andalusian Light Horse and Norman Knights  -  Posted: October 19, 2013  -  Manufacturer: HaT and Conquest Miniatures
HaT light cavalry compared side-by-side with Conquest plastic Norman knights. They scale very well, but that's not true for the other HaT plastic miniatures; the HaT light horse are actually at a different scale from the HaT medium cavalry, light foot, and heavy foot, so be careful when purchasing them.

Al-Andalus Andalusian Light Horse and Vikings do battle  -  Posted: October 19, 2013  -  Manufacturer: HaT and Wargames Factory Miniatures
The Andalusians frustrate the Viking raiders to no end with their light-horse tactics! By Odin's beard when will the stand and fight!?!? The HaT Andalusian light horse figures scale very well with both the Wargames Factory and Gripping Beast Vikings, but the other HaT Andalusians don't scale all that well, so be careful.

I rebased my 28mm Andalusians for some HotT or DBA action. I still have four more of these figures to paint!

Went with the pennant on this banner. Pretty hapy with these two as the blue went over pretty well! That being said, the blue on off-white shield design didn't really work. I should have put the design on top of a black outline...

These are the second couple of Andalusians that I have done. They are probably the best figs I have painted to date, but thanks to my amature photographer status I couldn't get a picture that did justice to the highlights of the lighter colour. Anyway, the shield inscription means compassion. As in, may Allah have compassion on your soul when I send it to him!

I liked the idea of the Andalusians; a culture in dark ages
Europe that was actually quite civilized... Anyway, here
are a couple, the only two I have done to date.
