The Patrician Romans are my favourite Romans... Why? Because they are the ones that ended the whole Rome thing! Well... in western Europe anyway. I mean, not that the goths who sacked Rome were all that much better... but I digress. I picked up this army on a whim in a group order because I had an Early Lombard army and I wanted a matched pair. Turns out I sold the Lombards before painting them... But this was a fun army to paint none the less.
The composition was pre-set by Alain Touller figurines: it supplied the light horse element and not the cavalry element, and all of the auxilliary elements instead of the warband elements. This kept cost down certainly, but it was likely also due to the fact that the goths from Touller figs are far too small to be compatible with the Romans of the same period. The figures in the set surprisingly lacked variation as well, with both the legionaries and the knights being a single pose! Overall though, it was still a nice set, although for the price I likely wouldn't buy from Touller again.

The entire Patrician Roman DBA II/83a army, with the LH and all auxiliary options.
I am pretty happy with it, despite being not so happy with the first five elements. I think the
reason I got off to a not-perfect start was that I essentially painted the first five elements
of the army as test figs! Overall though, it worked out very well in the end. Also as a note, the
background image is of Northern Italy!

The general's element for the army turned out well. I went with all red cloaks and a
distinct purple for the general himself. The banner was inspired by a couple of paintings of
period battles. I am pretty happy with this one, and it stands out well enough from the rest
of the army!

The one great thing about the Touller army pack is that it included some command figs
other than the command/general figures. This first element of knights includes a commander
with a sword, which is a great way to break up the otherwise uniform cataphract knight element.
I had to replace the spears/lances on the knights themselves, but otherwise they were perfect.

These turned out well, very similar to the pervious element without the command fig. Touller
offers two poses of knight, but naturally they send me only a single pose for all of the knights!
Replacing the spagetti-spears with paper clips added the needed variation though, so I am still pretty
happy with these!

A closer look at the aux command. This isn't actually a command element for the army, but I
really like it; there would have been a lot of banners within any one army. Most DBA armies have banners
only for the general/commander element, but that's not the case for this army!

This is the first shield design I painted for the Roman auxilliaries. Note how I changed the
specific execution of the shields when I did the second batch? The first style is reflected on the
shields on the left two elements, the seconds style on the shields on the right most element. I can
hardly notice the difference now, but I think it works!

This is the first element of a total of six elements required for the
DBA West Patrician Roman army. The Patrician Roman DBA army pack from
Touller Figurines only includes the auxilia options, no warbands, and so
I will be doing all the auxilia elements. Since the pack came with two
sets of command for the auxilia I decided to do only two different auxilia
regiments, meaning only two different shield designs! Here is the first one!
I am happy with how these turned out, and I like having the extra command-looking
elements.

The second element of auxilia I've done so far. The same shields
as the first, and a nice mixture of figures. Overall, I like the Touller figures
although I am not sure I would buy them again... They paint up well though.

The only element of blades in the Patrician Roman west army. Touller figs
only offer two variants of this figure, and I got four of the same figure in the pack,
which is very 1988 of AT figs! The other thing about these figures is that they're
huge! Absolutely huge! So big in fact that they are not compatible with Touller's
Gothic warband figures, which is likely why the warband option wasn't included in the
DBA army pack! Still, the nice big shields paint up easily.

The armoured light horse option here. The Touller DBA pack provided only
the light horse option (so, no second 3Cv option), which is fine by me! I like
the light horse element the best anyway, and the figures are nice. The riders
are cut in the middle to offer mor variation and pose possibilities. I am happy
with them.

The single element of skirmishing archers for the DBA army turned out
well. I notice that they are armed with swords and snazzy helmets! Not you run-of-the-mill
poor skirmishing types apparently!
