Viking Kings, Jarls, and Standard Bearers  -  Posted: November 3, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Gripping Beast
Here we have the majority of characters to lead the army. I put a lot of time into
these relative to the rest... Back in 2004/2005 they were some of my top figures.
I also sculpted more than a few braids onto the beards of these guys, as some started
out as Saxons. Everything is freehand, and you can see how with the battle standard there
I didn't have the patients to paint the design on the back! As if that matters anyway ;)
Overall, this army was beaten only once, and then only before it was completed.

Viking berzerkers  -  Posted: November 3, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Old Glory and Gripping Beast
These berzerkers, painted in 2004/2005 were a lot of fun to paint and play with in
Warhammer Ancient Battles. Basically they would stay in the unit until another
enemy unit got too close, then they would run out at them, killing and maiming
with great effectiveness. Often they didn't get the chance to go out, but when they
did it was messy! Again, with these guys I painted a base coat, then a heavy wash
and then highlighted with the original base coat. It was effective, but it's a lot
different than how I do it now!

Here are some markers of the dead, painted back in 2004/2005. I used them as objective
markers, or simply as gore markers, to mark where units died or whatever. Pretty fun to
paint for sure!

Viking Warriors with Armor  -  Posted: November 3, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Old Glory and Gripping Beast
A large unit of 30 viking hirdmen or huscarls, the king's guard, or standing army. Oddly,
at the time of putting this army together, I painted mostly the medium-armoured free men, and
only a single unit of these hirdmen... Anyway, as you can see I took much less time on the
shields than I currently do, but I enjoyed it as much at the time all the same! Here's
another example of how I didn't have the patients to paint both sides of the banner!

Viking bondi  -  Posted: November 3, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Old Glory and Gripping Beast
One of two units of bondi, or medium armoured vikings painted back in
2004/2005. I really enjoyed painting the shields, so colourful, but not all
that highly detailed. I can't imagine painting this many figures with my current
method... Of course, looking back, I took about the same amount of time to paint
one of these figs then as I do now!

This is another unit of bondi, or medium armoured vikings painted back in
2004/2005. At this time I was using a base coat, a heavy wash, and then
highlighting with the base coat again. It certainly worked, but it isn't
my current method. Also, I only had the patients to do one side if the banner!

Viking bondi  -  Posted: November 3, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Old Glory and Gripping Beast
Painted back in 2004/2005, these are the two multi-base stands that I used to fill
out my units
more quickly; being 40x40mm, they take up the room of four figures,
while only requiring me to paint three! I tried to do little dioramas where I
could easily.

Viking archers  -  Posted: November 3, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Old Glory and Gripping Beast
Ah, 20 archers ready for battle. These too were painted back in 2004/2005. So
many archers, representing so much hope :) My plan for these guys was to have enough
archers to do up a realistic sea battle... But alas, it was never to be.

Viking bondi  -  Posted: Circa 2005/2006  -  Manufacturer: Old Glory Miniatures
These guys were originally painted for Warhammer Ancients (WAB) as part of my 1500 point Norwegian Viking
army. They were saving me time painting figs as they take up a 6x2cm base with only four figs on it.
They were also to double as a 28mm Viking DBA army as well. Turns out nobody played 28mm DBA and everyone
stopped playing WAB, so they were put away and forgotten about for three years until I needed a HotT army!
It is worth noting that these figs were painted in 2005/2006 during my 'I only paint to play' painting
phase. That's why they suck! E-gads, I can't believe I am showing these at all!

Viking hirdmen  -  Posted: Some time in 2005/2006  -  Manufacturer: Old Glory Miniatures
These figs have
the same story as the previous element. Note the dying guy in the back right there?
He was supposed to have an arrow in his chest but I couldn't even be bothered to put one in! I was a slacker
in those days, make no mistake!

Viking warriors  -  Posted: Circa 2005/2006  -  Manufacturer: Gripping Beast and Old Glory Miniatures
More vikings, these are a mix of Old Glory and Gripping Beast miniatures. I understand that Gripping Beast
has released a number of vikings since these days that are much more viking-like, as opposed to the
fairly uninspired, un-vikinglike figs :)

Viking warriors  -  Posted: Circa 2005/2006  -  Manufacturer: Old Glory Miniatures
More Old Glory vikings. Old Glory has some strange poses for sure... These guys are all running at
full tilt, but all but one is not even looking where they are going! It's funny in a cool way! Some
poor paintwork here for sure, especially the flesh.

Viking warriors  -  Posted: Circa 2005/2006  -  Manufacturer: Gripping Beast and Old Glory Miniatures
Old glory figs in the front, Gripping beast in the back. Again the Old Glory fig there isn't looking
where he is running, and the Gripping Beast figs look more like aged members of Three Dog Night!

Viking warriors  -  Posted: Circa 2005/2006  -  Manufacturer: Gripping Beast and Old Glory Miniatures
Another element mixing Old Glory and Gripping beast figs. Can you pick out the single Gripping Beast
fig in the group? Note that the shield there with the red and yellow stripes bears the heraldry of
the Spanish kingdom of Aragon! Coincidence? Definitely!

Here are some pictures of my vikings. I have so many of these
hairy, axe wielding raiders that I thought I would put up some
pics of the rank and file... Even these pics are a mere pinch
of my nearly 200 painted vikings... Vikings, what is not to love
about them?

Viking Kings  -    -  Manufacturer: Gripping Beast
These are the two leaders of my Viking army, Munin and Hugin respectively.
Formerly known as Asvid and Gaeirvi, they changed their names because they
could never win a battle ;) Check out their first battle together in the
Battles section.

This is likely the best set of vikings (out of the hundreds) that I have painted to date. It is a 60mm by 40mm
base that is intended to play both Warhammer Ancient Battles and 28mm DBA, although the DBA reality is unlikely.
Still, I am not too unhappy with the way they turned out!
