The whole group of greater fyrd together in a shield wall, ready to take on theVikingror the Norman orc (orc == devil foreigner in old Anglo-Saxon according to the series '1066: Battle for Middle-earth'). The 'greater' fyrd were the free men ruled by the Anglo-Danish kings that were called up for battle when the need was greatest. Most of these guys had little if any experience, they had a shield and a spear to fight with and typically no armour. Basically, the fodder that would hide behind the more experienced warrior and hope to heck that the enemy didn't break through to them!
